Most of us have travelled on an aeroplane. Remember who came for help when you had a problem with fixing your seat inclination? Or who served you that tasty dessert during your journey? The flight attendants, right? Yes, the lovely ladies and gentlemen who offer us help with anything and everything we need during our flight.
Flight attendants are part of the airline crew and you will meet them on every flight your take. Commonly known as air hostesses or air stewards based on their gender, these individuals take care of you on your journey through the sky. From greeting you with a pleasant smile to serving everything you need during the flight, these professionals do everything they can in order to make your flight a comfortable one.
Now, let me come to the point. Have you ever wished to become one of them? As we all know being an airhostess or an air steward is one of the most glamorous and interesting professions in the world. You will get to travel the world for free, enjoy all premium services, meet people from different parts of the world and also earn a handsome paycheque at the end of every flight. Sounds cool? Then, read till the end. I’m going to tell you about the routes towards becoming an air hostess or a flight steward.
How to become an air hostess/ air steward?
Trust me, a lot of people are looking for the answer for this question. Being a dream job for many, the answer is definitely worth a lot.
Let me tell you that the role of air hostess or an air steward is something where your personality and physical attributes matter more than your educational qualification. The minimum educational qualification one needs to apply to an airline company for such a job role is to have passed 12th.
But don’t think it’s gonna be something easy and anyone who has passed 12th can readily do this. There are physical and personality requirements that come along. Your height, weight, complexion, age, marital status, communication skills etc will be considered.
Let’s look at the eligibility criteria first. At least on paper, a 12th grade certificate will do when it comes to educational requirements.
Though not mandatory, it’s better to join an airhostess training academy and take up a course before applying for the job. There are certificate courses, diploma courses, degree courses and even post graduate courses. Let me list out a few popular courses here for you.
- Certificate course in airhostess management
- Certificate course in Air Hostess/Flight Purser
- Diploma in Professional Cabin Crew Services
- Diploma in Airlines Management
- Certificate course in Aviation Hospitality & Travel Management
- Diploma in Professional Ground Staff Services
- Diploma in Airport Management & Customer Care
- BBA Aviation
But in my opinion, always go for a course conducted in association with a reputed airline company. This will increase your chances of getting recruited.
Here are a few schools you can apply to
- Air Hostess Academy, Pune, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Mumbai
- Frankfinn Institute of Air Hostess, New Delhi, and Mumbai
- Rai University, Ahmedabad.
- Rajiv Gandhi Memorial College of Aeronautics, Jaipur
- Universal Aviation Academy, Chennai
- Avalon Academy, Dehradun
- Universal Airhostess Academy, Chennai
- Jet Airways Training Academy, Mumbai
- PTC Aviation Academy, Chennai, and Bangalore
Then for newbies, your age should be somewhere between 19-26.
And also, you should be unmarried and physically fit with a fair to clear skin complexion. Apart from this, there are specifications when it comes to your height and weight. Oops! That’s a bit unfair I guess. But as we all know, the world is changing and stereotypes are being overthrown.
The selection process
If you think you have what it takes to be an air hostess or an air steward, the next step is to wait for opportunities to pop up. Most airline companies publish recruitment notifications online. Follow the procedures and apply for the post if you meet the eligibility criteria.
The selection process varies in different airline companies. But most international airlines still follow standardised protocols while hiring their staff.
The first stage is a screening round. Here, most candidates who don’t meet the requirements will be eliminated. The second stage is usually a written round. This will be followed by a group discussion round and finally a personal interview round before receiving your offer letter. The selection process is designed to test the aptitude, personality, general knowledge and communication skills. So, only the right candidates will be able to clear all the rounds.
In house training
Now, you’ve the offer letter in hand. But that doesn’t mean you can start flying just like that. Remember what I said earlier? The minimum education qualification to apply is an HSE certificate. So, you will definitely undergo some training before starting your job.
In most international airlines, the selected candidate will then have to attend a 5-6 week long flight attendant training course. On successful completion of the course, the candidate will receive a certificate which will also be considered as a license in few countries.
The flying experience
After successfully completing the course, you’re all set to fly. But most times, your company won’t let you travel in international flights before gaining relevant experience working as flight attendants in domestic flights. I would recommend you to be extremely careful during this period as you will be under the supervision of your superiors and even a small mistake can cause major damage to your career.
Being a flight attendant is something many people dream of. You get to travel the world for free, enjoy premium services and also make a lot of money. Flight attendants usually earn around 8 lakhs per annum at the start of their career. If you get into international flights, the amount will go higher.Start free chat with an expert
