As an emergency medical technician (EMT), you will be working in a specialised medical field concerned with the care of illnesses and injuries requiring immediate medical attention. You will be trained to respond quickly to emergency situations regarding medical issues, traumatic injuries and accident scenes.
The work of an emergency medical technician mainly involves providing assistance to the emergency physicians/specialists in the treatment of patients who have life threatening conditions. They may have to respond to emergency calls to provide efficient and immediate care to the critically ill and injured, and to transport the patient to a medical facility.
A candidate seeking admission to emergency medical technology courses shall have studied Physics, Chemistry and Biology as principal subjects at the 10+2 level or its equivalent.
Candidates can also join certificate courses in this field after completing their 10th.
The duration of emergency medical technology courses is four years including a 12 months compulsory internship. Bachelor's degrees in emergency medical technology are available in different names like BSc Accident and Emergency Care Technology and BSc Emergency Medical Technology.
Emergency medical care aspirants are also eligible to take admission to diploma programs after completing their 10+2.
