As a medical laboratory technician, you assist physicians to verify the causes of an illness, make medical decisions and determine treatment options using various medical laboratory tests.
Medical lab technicians work in hospitals and private laboratories (clinical or research) performing routine duties like collecting, processing and analyzing specimens. They examine and analyse blood, body fluids, tissues, and cells so that clinicians can determine the causes of illness and the extent of injury. Medical lab technicians are responsible for performing lab procedures and maintaining instruments.
Maintaining and operating standard laboratory equipment like centrifuges, titrators, pipetting machines and pH meters etc
Ensuring that the laboratory is well-stocked and everything is clearly and correctly labelled
Testing and analyzing bodily fluids, such as blood and urine by using a microscope or automatic analyzer
Setting up, maintaining, and cleaning medical laboratory equipment and collecting blood or tissue samples from patients

A candidate seeking admission to Medical Lab Technologist or Technician courses should have qualified 10+2 or equivalent with 50% marks in English, Physics, Chemistry & Biology.
Taking a vocational stream with Medical Lab Technology as one of the subjects at +2 level, will be an added advantage.
Undergraduate courses in medical lab science are available in different names like BSc Medical Lab Technology and BMLT(Bachelor of Medical Lab Technology) . The duration of these courses is three years . A few institutions provide 4 year degree programs as well.
DMLT is a 2 year undergraduate diploma program and the qualification required is passing 10+2 or equivalent.
Certification courses in Medical Lab Technology are also available after 10+2 or equivalent examination.
A person with a bachelor's Degree in Medical Lab Technology from a recognized institution would be eligible for admission in PG courses like MMLT OR MSc MLT. The duration of these courses is two years.
The eligibility and duration of the course can depend on the college/university. Most colleges prefer BMLT graduates and duration is usually one year.
