As an operation theatre technician, you will be primarily working on maintaining and preparing an operation theatre for surgery. You will also provide technical assistance to surgeons during the operation.
An operation theatre technician usually works inside the operation theatre in a hospital set up. Their work mainly includes setting up the OT and instrument trolleys for specific surgeries, positioning the operation table and patient etc. They also provide assistance to the surgeons during surgery and do autoclaving and preparation of sterile supplies required for use in the operation theatre.
Studying Physics, Chemistry and Biology at the 10+2 level and securing a good aggregate percentage is essential for admission to an undergraduate course in OT technology.
After plus two, you may do a bachelor’s degree in Operation theatre technology which is of 3 to 3 ½ years duration.
A 2 year diploma course in Operation theatre technology can be taken after 10+2. Some institutions allow lateral entry into the second year of an undergraduate course after completing the diploma qualification.
After completing BSc, you can take a postgraduate degree in Operation theatre technology.
MSc Operation theatre technology course can also be taken up after a Bachelor’s degree in medicine.
