Game Designer

As a game designer you will be specialised in conceiving and delivering games. You'll bring ideas, build prototypes, create interactive narration and develop the game's mechanics.

What do game designers do?

Game designers will be creating narrative features, such as story-lines, role-play mechanics and character bios. They will work as part of a multidisciplinary team that includes games developers, programmers, games artists, animators and quality assurance testers.They may work on a design that is from a pre-approved idea, as in a game based upon a film.

What does a typical day at work involve?

  • Checked Observing and learning about already existing game designs
  • Checked Conducting market research to understand what your target audience wants
  • Checked Considering, planning and detailing every element of a new game including the setting, rules, story flow, props, vehicles, character interface and modes of play
  • Checked Writing scripts and designing storyboards
  • Checked Working collaboratively with others, including games developers, artists and programmers, to produce a prototype - a small-scale playable version of the game
  • Checked Training quality assurance (QA) testers to play the game so they can test it properly
  • Checked Leading on the user experience (UX) design of the game, ensuring players have the best experience

What are the areas of specialisation in Game designing?

A level designer, work on levels (also called maps) in stages. The very first stage is planning the entire game’s set of maps.
In Games, Content design is the creation of characters, items, puzzles, and missions
Interface designer deals with the construction of the user interactions & feedback interface, like menus or heads-up displays in a game

How to become a Game designer

Step 1
Take any stream in +2

Candidates who have appeared for a 10 + 2 examination, or its educational equivalent in any discipline ( Science, Commerce or Arts) with an interest in Design & Innovation is eligible for a bachelors in multimedia and animation.

Step 2
Bachelor’s degree in Multimedia and Animation or Certification in Animation

Take Bachelor’s degree in Multimedia and Animation or Diploma/Certification in Animation from recognised Institute/College/University.


Bachelor of Fine Arts (Applied Art and Visual Communication) can be an alternative path towards game designing.

Step 3
Master of Science in Game Design

Take Master’s course in Game design which is of 2 years. This is available both in India and foreign universities.
