What do architects do?

Architects design all kinds of buildings, from schools to skyscrapers, and hospitals to hotels and houses. Before constructing a building, an architect draws up a plan for the building. They also help in the restoration and protection of old buildings. They supervise projects from its starting stage to its completion stage.

What areas can an architect specialise in?

Residential architects focus most of their efforts on constructing beautiful private dwellings for homeowners.
If you focus on this role, you may specialize in larger ventures for businesses or government entities, erecting public buildings such as shopping malls, libraries, government facilities, and more.
This type of architecture focuses on outdoor areas. If you go into this specialized field, you might design parklands, gardens, and lawns surrounding college campus buildings and other public destinations and private homes.
Urban design involves the arrangement and design of buildings, public spaces, transport systems, services, and amenities for creating and shaping cities and towns

How to become an Architect?

Step 1
Take Science stream with Physics and Mathematics at + 2 level

Science with Mathematics stream is recommended as Physics and Math are compulsory subjects (along with English and two other optional subjects like Chemistry/ Biology/ Biotechnology or any vocational subject).

Step 2
Take a Bachelor of Architecture (B Arch) degree

Bachelor of Architecture course is of 5 year duration.

Note: Diploma courses

You can also pursue a three year Diploma course in Architectural assistantship or Diploma in Construction management which will enable you to work as assistant architects. However these courses are offered by very few recognised institutions in India.

Step 3
Take Master of Architecture (MArch)

For further qualification, you may take an MArch with suitable subject specialisations . MArch course is of 2 year duration.

Note:M Plan after Civil Engineering

You may also take a BTech in Civil Engineering and then take Master of Planning (M Plan) which is equivalent to M Arch in Planning.

India (MArch from IIT Roorkee)

  • B Arch or its equivalent with at least 60% marks or CGPA of 6.00 on a 10 point scale (55% or 5.50 CGPA for SC/ST/PD category).
  • Valid Normalised GATE score.
  • Direct admission upto 10% of the intake without GATE will be offered to IIT graduates with a minimum CGPA of 8.00 on a 10 point scale.

Foreign (M Arch from MIT USA)

  • Bachelor’s degree in any discipline preferably with Mathematics and Science
  • GRE qualification
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Minimum IELTS score of 7 or minimum TOEFL Score of 600
  • A portfolio of work
  • An Essay of one or two pages describing why you are applying and your qualifications for the degree.
