Leather Designer

As a leather designer, you will be involved in designing and manufacturing of leather products by integrating design concepts with material knowledge.

What do leather designers do?

Leather Designers with expertise in fashion, designing and material knowledge are involved in design and develop of new leather products either by associating with any company , or their own.They have to design various leather products by bringing innovative ideas and aesthetic sense without losing the quality and customer expectations of the products.

What does a typical day at work involve?

  • Checked Do research and design new leather products
  • Checked Meet customers and understand their expectations
  • Checked Make changes and improve the quality of leather products ( shoes, chappals, scandals, bags etc) which are already manufactured
  • Checked Ensure the quality of leather samples and products by different quality tests
  • Checked Discuss with customers about different designs and finalise it
  • Checked Use AutoCAD, Inventor, SolidWorks and Photoshop to prepare designs
  • Checked Give directions and assist co-workers and manufactures
  • Checked Use new materials and ideas in manufacturing and designing of leather products
  • Checked Promote new designs by using social or media platforms
  • Checked Manage and coordinate with the production of designs
  • Checked Do cutting, colouring, stitching and polishing etc

How to become a Leather Designer ?

Step 1
Take any stream at the +2 level

To take up undergraduate studies in design you can choose any stream at +2 level. However if you wish to take up BTech in Leather Technology at bachelor’s level you should opt for Science stream with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

Step 2
Take Bachelor of Design in Leather Design/ Btech in Leather Technology

You can take up a BDes course of four year duration with specialisation in Leather design / Leather goods and accessory design offered by institutes in India (NIFT/ FDDI). If you are interested in pursuing a course in leather technology a 4 year Btech in Leather technology (CSIR-Central Leather Research Institute- Chennai) or a 3 year diploma in Leather Goods and Footwear Technology (Govt. Polytechnic, Mumbai) can be pursued. Bachelors courses which include leather designing as part of the curriculum, like BA (Hons) Leather for Fashion (University of Northampton) and BFA-Fashion designing (Pratt University) are available in universities abroad.


Note :
  • Diploma and PG Diploma courses in Leather technology and design of duration 1 to 1 ½ years are available (CSIR- CLRI)
  • There are also short duration courses in the design of specific leather accessories offered by institutes in India and abroad.
Step 3
Take Master of Design

A master’s course exclusively for leather design is not commonly available but you can take up MDes in Apparel design or Lifestyle Accessory design which include design of leather items.

  • Interview with the course faculty
  • a remote jury assignment or a day-long creative assignment
