As a primary school teacher, you will be dealing with students of 6 years to 9 years, providing basic knowledge in all subjects. You will also help students develop proper skills and social abilities.

What do primary school teachers do?

A primary school teacher engages students in the learning process and encourages the overall development of students, emotional, social and intellectual.Primary school teachers also plan and monitor the curriculum, keep the records of all the activities of the student and communicate it to the parents.

What does a typical day at work involve?

How to become a primary school teacher

Step 1
Take any stream at the plus 2

There is no requirement to take any particular stream in +2. Any stream would make you eligible for the training program or course

Step 2
Take TTC

This is a 2 year course with one year practical training and makes you eligible to take up teaching positions in primary classes.


Note :

You can also take up a Bachelor of Elementary Education which is an integrated degree program of 4 years duration including one year practical training

Step 3
TET exams

These are eligibility exams for teachers for teaching lower primary and upper primary classes. There is the CTET conducted at the national level and state level TETs conducted by Individual states.

Foreign (For admission into Master of Teaching (MTchg) Primary at the University of Auckland , New Zealand

  • An undergraduate degree with a GPE of 5 or its equivalent
  • English Language Proficiency : Overall score of 6.5 and no bands below 6.0 in IELTS (Academic)
  • Overall score of 90 and a written score of 21 in TOEFL
  • On the basis of interview and Efficacy assessment Test
