As a biotechnology engineer, you will be engaged in applying the principles of chemical, mechanical, electrical and computer science engineering to understand biological processes in living organisms in order to bring about revolutionary changes in the fields of agriculture, health care, food and pharmaceutical industries.
A biotechnology engineer employs an integrated approach of fundamental biological sciences and principles of engineering to study, improve, and develop bioprocesses from the laboratory scale to the manufacturing scale. The areas of operation of a biotechnology engineer ranges from plant molecular biology, bio modelling and drug designing to cancer research and genetic engineering.
To be eligible for admission to an undergraduate course in biotechnology engineering, you need to study Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects at the 10+2 level. The other subjects to be taken are English along with Chemistry/ Biotechnology/ Biology/ Technical Vocational subject. However choosing Biotechnology/ Biology would give you a broader base for taking up this discipline.
Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Technology is a four year course offered by Universities and Institutes of Technology in India and abroad
After graduation, you can take an M Tech / ME degree course in Biotechnology Engineering which is of 2 year duration. You can also take up the equivalent MS degree course offered by foreign universities and select institutions in India.
It would be of advantage to take up a 5yr integrated MTech in Biotechnology, combining the BTech and MTech program, offered by select institutes like the IITs
After post-graduation, you can take a PhD in Biotechnology Engineering specialisations which would give you better prospects of careers in Research facilities.
Select institutions may offer an integrated MTech-Phd in Biotechnology related specialisions.

Biotechnological engineers must analyze the needs and best possibilities to design appropriate solutions.
Since biotechnological engineers work with other professionals during their research and frequently work in teams, they must be able to express their ideas clearly. They must also seek others’ ideas and incorporate those ideas into the problem-solving process.
Biotechnological engineers must be creative to come up with innovative and integrative advances in healthcare equipment and other technology.
Biotechnological engineers typically deal with and solve problems in complex biological systems.
