What areas can an industrial engineer specialise in?

Quality Engineering is a specialised branch of industrial engineering which deals with the principles of quality assurance and control of products and services.
Cost engineering is devoted to the management of project cost, and it involves estimation, cost control, cost forecasting, investment appraisal and risk analysis.
Product design and manufacturing engineering deals with the research and development, and manufacturing of tools, processes, machines and equipment.
Operations research is mainly concerned with the analysis and optimization of operational problems using scientific and mathematical methods.

How to become an Industrial Engineer?

Step 1
Take Science stream with Physics, Chemistry and Maths

Studying Physics, Chemistry and Maths at the 10+2 level and securing a minimum score in these subjects would be a prerequisite for admission into engineering courses.

Step 2
Take a B.Tech Industrial Engineering

The common specialisation offered at the UG level in this area is Industrial Engineering. You can either go for a B.Tech or a dual degree (5 year Integrated B.Tech or M.Tech)

Step 3
Take an M.Tech/M.S. in Industrial engineering

After completing the UG degree, you can either go for an M.Tech/M.S. in Industrial engineering or Quality engineering


Note :

Bachelor’s in mechanical engineering might suffice as a qualification to get admission into PG level Industrial engineering courses.
