Material Science and Engineering

As a materials science engineer, you will design, develop, process and test materials, particularly solids to create a wide variety of products. You will study the properties and structures of metals, ceramics, plastics, composites, and nanomaterials in order to create new materials that meet various mechanical, electrical, and chemical requirements.

This discipline deals with the design, synthesis, characterization and theory/modeling/simulation of nanomaterials.
This field is concerned with the development of new electronic materials to meet requirements in a growing range of application areas like spintronics, optical computing, and fuel cells.
This field deals with materials selection, computational tools, materials processing, and failure analysis.

How to become a materials science engineer?

Step 1
Take Science stream with Physics, Chemistry and Maths

Studying Physics, Chemistry and Maths at the 10+2 level and securing a minimum score in these subjects would be a prerequisite for admission into engineering courses.

Step 2
Take B.Tech. Materials science and Engineering

The common specialisation offered at the UG level in this area is materials science and Engineering. You can either go for a B.Tech or a dual degree (5 year Integrated B.Tech/M.Tech).

Step 3
Take M.Tech./MS in Material Science Engineering

After completing the UG degree, you can either go for an M.Tech/M.S. in Material Science engineering or any other specialisation of choice.
