Agricultural studies are mostly aimed at improving the efficiency and productivity of agricultural practices through adapting more sustainable methods and newer technologies.

A graduate in agriculture plays important roles in the agricultural sector of the country. They have to conduct studies and researches to mitigate and find solutions to the issues that affect agriculture like crop failures, drought, loss in productivity etc.

What job roles can be taken up in the field of agriculture?

Agricultural scientists work on different research projects that aim at improving the quality and productivity of crops.
Generally, agricultural officers are appointed by government and non-governmental institutions to implement and manage agri projects at the grass root level. They are supposed to visit fields and provide advice to the farmers regarding the agricultural methods that are to be adopted.
Soil scientists examine the chemical and biological compositions of different soils and recommend soil treatments and suitable crops based on the characteristics of soils.
Food scientists examine the quality of food in terms of nutrients, hygiene and safety. Food technologists develop new technologies for the purpose of processing food and improving the quality of preservation.

How to become?

Step 1
Take Science stream with Physics, Chemistry and Biology

Studying Physics, Chemistry and Biology at the +2 level and securing a minimum score in these subjects would be a prerequisite for admission into Agriculture courses.

Step 2
Take a B.Sc Agriculture

Bsc Agriculture is a 4 year undergraduate program. Admissions to these programs are based on entrance exam scores and academic performance in plus two.

Step 3
Take M.Sc in Agriculture

Minimum requirement for a masters in agriculture is a 4 year BSc Agriculture or an equivalent degree. The selection shall be based on previous academic record at the UG level and performance in entrance tests. These programs are usually 2 years in duration.

Note :

A bachelor’s degree in related fields like Horticulture or Forestry will also suffice as a qualification for admission into PG courses in agriculture.

Step 4
Take MPhil/PhD

Master of Science or an equivalent examination in Agriculture or Home Science or Agricultural Engineering are the basic requirements for a PhD in agriculture. Some institutes conduct entrance examinations and interviews as a part of their admission procedure.
