A civil lawyer act as both advocates and advisors who takes up non criminal cases concerning the rights and liberties of the people.

What do civil lawyers do?

Lawyers advise and represent clients in courts and in private legal matters by conducting research and analysis of legal problems. Interpreting laws, rulings, and regulations for individuals and businesses and communicating with the other party's attorneys and the court is one major duty. Serving discovery requests on the other party, in which you are asking for specific information. In a divorce case, discovery involves having spouses list their financial resources and assets.

How to become a Civil Lawyer?

Step 1
Take any stream in 10+2

Candidate with any stream in plus two level is eligible for taking law at the undergraduate level.But plus two in humanities is always an added advantage.

Step 2
Take Integrated BA/BBA/BSc/BCom LLB

The common course offered at the UG level in law are 5 Year- Integrated bachelor's degree plus LLB. Depending on the stream in plus two you can do a corresponding degree+LLB as a single professional course. Civil law specialisation in UG level are available only in very few institutes.

Note : Any Bachelor's Degree and Take LLB

Someone looking to build a career in Civil law can either do an integrated BA/BBA/BCom/Bsc LLB or do a graduation in any degree and go for 3 year LLB. it’s better to take a dual degree at the UG level which will help you save a year.Graduation in any stream in the minimum requirement for LLB admission.

Step 3
Take LLM with Civil Law Specialisation

LLM is a one year masters program in law with multiple specialisations, including Civil, intellectual property, criminal,business,corporate law etc. A candidate who holds an LLB degree is eligible for the LLM admission.

Note : PG Diploma in civil law

Law Graduates can do a PG diploma if he/she wishes to pursue a career in a specific field

Step 4
Take MPhil/ PhD

Aspirants with an LLM or equivalent degree with minimum marks are eligible for MPhil/Doctor degree in legal studies.M Phil will be of 1 to 2 years and PhD will take minimum 3 Years.

India(Master Of Laws (Llm) In Civil Law From National Law School Of India University(Nlsiu))

  • Candidate needs to possess a bachelor’s degree in law which is approved by Bar Council of India.
  • Candidate needs to score at least 55 percent in his/her qualifying L.L.B degree.
  • Should acquire qualifying cut off marks in CLAT PG Exam.

Foreign(Master of Laws (LL.M) in International Commercial Arbitration from Stockholm University, Sweden)

  • Documents supporting proficiency in English (English 6, English Course B, attending a At least three years of full-time legal studies equivalent to 180 ECTS
  • secondary school or university where instruction is conducted in English, or passing one of the international language tests recognised by Stockholm University).
  • One letter of recommendation (rom an employer, mentor, professor, or professional colleague)
  • IELTS: overall score should be 6.
  • TOEFL: Total Score 90.
  • Only applicants having completed one of the following courses, are eligible for the program
    1. EIPL programme: One course in intellectual property law or an equivalent topic that corresponds to at least 15 ECTS
      ICAL programme: One course in procedural law or an equivalent topic that corresponds to at least 7,5 ECTS.
