Biophysics

As a biophysicist, you will be involved in the research and analysis of biological processes making use of the principles of physics.

What does a biophysicist do?

Biophysicists conduct research in areas such as molecular biology, cell development, neuroscience, genetics and medicine using analytical and computer aided methods. They work to develop new technologies for overcoming illnesses, producing sustainable resources and solving the mysteries of life and living organisms.

What areas can a biophysicist specialise in?

Molecular biophysics is the study of the physical principles that are involved in the functioning of biomolecular systems and aims at explaining biological function based on the organisation and dynamics of single molecules to complex molecular structures.
Membrane biophysics is the study of the physical principles governing the structure and functions of biological membranes.
Neurobiophysics is the study of the structure of the nervous system and neurological processes on the basis of the physical principles involved.
Bioenergetics is the study of energy transformations and energy exchanges occurring inside living things and with their surroundings.
Medical biophysics is the discipline that uses principles of Biology, Mathematics, Physics and Engineering to solve problems related to human health.

How to become a biophysicist ?

Step 1
Take Science stream with Physics, Chemistry and Biology

Physics, Chemistry and Biology at the 10+2 level with a good aggregate percentage is a prerequisite to admission to a bachelor’s course in biophysics.

Step 2
Take BSc in Biophysics/Biotechnology

Biophysics is rarely offered by Indian universities at the bachelor’s level. But a 3 year B.Sc. course in Biotechnology includes Biophysics as a component. It should be noted that BSc Biophysics is offered by many foreign universities.


Note :

Bachelor’s degree in Zoology, Botany, Physiology, Physics, Chemistry, Biochemistry or Microbiology makes you eligible to specialise in Biophysics at the PG level.

Step 3
Take MSc Biophysics

After graduation in Biophysics or other relevant disciplines you can take up a Master’s program in Biophysics which is of 2 year duration and is offered by many institutions in India and abroad.

Step 4
Take MPhil/PhD in Biophysics

Higher qualifications of MPhil/PhD is essential for working in independent research and development and for taking up academic positions.
