As a physiologist, you will be studying the biological and chemical processes that are involved in the functioning of living organisms to provide useful information for agriculture, food production and medical science.

What does a Physiologist do?

Physiologists conduct research on the functional aspects of plant, animal or human body. They study respiration, circulation, excretion, reproduction and growth of living organisms under normal and abnormal conditions and provide valuable inputs to areas of pharmaceutical development, disease identification and treatment.

What does a typical day at work involve?

  • Checked Study the anatomy of the human body
  • Checked See how organs and systems work together
  • Checked Understand what effects outside agents have on the human body
  • Checked Develop exercise programs to improve strength, endurance and circulatory functioning
  • Checked Prescribe individualized exercise programs
  • Checked Conduct research and write reports

What are the specialisations in Physiology?

Plant physiologists study the life processes occurring in plants, conduct research on improving crop yields and developing pest control methods for providing support to food developers.
Human physiologists study the mechanical, physical, and biochemical functioning of the human body to understand how it works and adapts to stress, physical activity and illness. Closely related to the area of medical science, research in human physiology explores methods to develop new medical therapies and methods to improve the quality of human life.
Veterinary physiologists investigate the bodily processes and the functioning of biological systems of animals. The research carried out by veterinary physiologists support the development of methods of diagnosis and treatment of animal diseases.

How to become a physiologist?

Step 1
Take Science Stream with Physics, Chemistry and Biology

Students who have passed 10+2 or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry and Biology as subjects are eligible for physiology programs at the undergraduate level. Minimum marks requirement may vary from institute to institute.

Step 2
Take BSc Physiology

BSc Physiology programs are available only in very few colleges in India. Students who wish to pursue a career in Physiology can opt for a bachelor's degree in any biological sciences before doing a Physiology specialisation at the postgraduate level. BSc courses are usually 3 year programs.

Step 3
Take MSc Physiology

Candidates who are seeking admissions to MSc Physiology must have passed BSc Physiology or any bachelor's degree with one subject of biological science. The duration of this program is usually two years.

Step 4
Take MPhil/PhD

MPhil/PhD admission requirements vary from colleges to colleges. Few institutes conduct their own test and interview as a part of their admission procedure. Candidates must hold a post graduation in the specific field or equivalent as a minimum requirement for MPhil/PhD.
