Data Scientist

As a Data Scientist you will be using processes, algorithms and systems to analyse and interpret complex digital data in order to assist a business in its decision-making.

What does a Data Scientist do?

Data scientists primarily work at solving business-related problems using data-driven techniques. They collect large amounts of unruly data and perform statistical analysis, using various machine learning-based tools or processes, to extract order and patterns and spot important trends. They use this information to make predictions that can help in making future plans for the business.

What does a typical day at work involve?

  • Checked Analyzing the data to identify patterns and trends
  • Checked Validating the data to ensure accuracy, completeness, and uniformity
  • Checked Devising and applying models and algorithms to mine the stores of big data
  • Checked Interpreting the data by using different tools to discover solutions and opportunities
  • Checked Clearly communicating research findings to colleagues and management

What are the job roles of Data Scientists ?

Data Analysts obtain statistical information by analysing data and are also responsible for presenting the data in the form of charts, graphs and tables.
Business analysts use the analysis of data for identifying business needs and requirements and solving problems by designing technical solutions.
Data engineers aggregate and organize data from different sources, and then load them into databases or data warehouses.
Database Administrators are the ones who are responsible for all things related to the monitoring, operation and maintenance of databases.
The data architect creates the blueprints for data management systems to integrate, centralize, protect and maintain the data sources.

How to become a Data Scientist

Step 1
Take Science Stream with Maths at +2

Studying Science stream with Maths at the +2 level is the prerequisite for pursuing higher studies in Data science. Taking Computer Science with Maths would be preferable.

Step 2
Take B.Sc. Data science/ Maths/ Statistics or Computer Science

The common courses offered at the UG level in this area is BSc in Data Science or in Computer Science. Bachelor’s in Math/ Statistics which is of 3 years can also be considered.

Step 3
Take M.Sc. in Data science or M.Tech in Computer Science

After graduation you can go for Masters in Data Science which is provided by few institutions in india but many abroad. in Computer Science with specialisation in Data science may also be considered.

Note :

Pg Diploma in Data Science and various certificate programs are available like the Certified Analytics Professional (CAP) program, Certified Specialist in Predictive Analytics (CSPA) program and the Data Science Certificate

Skills Required

Communication skills

Data scientist will need to clearly and fluently translate their technical findings to a non-technical team, such as the Marketing or Sales departments. Thus communication skills are highly required.

Analytical skills

Data scientists must possess strong analytical skills, as they will be analyzing large datasets. They will need to improve their ability to run experimental analysis, scale their data strategy and implement machine learning.

Mathematical skills

Data scientist will be dealing with large volumes of data. Good mathematical and statistical skills would be required for analysing and interpreting this data to obtain organised information.

Problem solving skills

To be a good Data Scientist it’s important to be good at problem solving. Data scientists don't just need to know how to solve a problem that's defined for them, but also how to find and define those problems in the first place.

Team skills

Teamwork is vital to be a data scientist. They need to be selfless, embracing feedback and sharing their knowledge with the team.
