Research Analyst

As a research analyst you will be researching, analyzing, interpreting and presenting data related to economics, markets, operations, finance/accounting and other departments related to the field you work in.

What do Research Analysts do?

Research analysts collect, examine and analyse data, such as financial information, performance trends, economic trends and news, political climate, industry changes, or specific business developments and organise their analysis into a research report.

What does a typical day at work involve?

  • Checked Finding out about developments and trends from the sector, government and academia by reading articles and examining online discussion forums, industry and government websites.
  • Checked Meeting with supervisors and fellow analysts, to exchange notes and ideas
  • Checked Carrying out quantitative analysis which includes statistical modelling, extrapolation of graphs and regression models
  • Checked Designing questionnaire for interviews
  • Checked Conducting qualitative analysis through informant interviews, focus groups, and expert panels

What are the job roles ?

A Market Research Analyst studies market conditions to examine the potential sales of a product or service.
An Operations Research Analyst uses advanced techniques including optimization, data mining, statistical analysis and mathematical modeling to develop measures that help businesses and organizations operate more efficiently and cost-effectively
Economic Research Analyst conduct research, prepare reports, or formulate plans to address economic problems related to the production and distribution of goods and services
A Financial Analyst is primarily concerned with performing financial forecasting, evaluating operational metrics and analyzing financial data.
Equity Research Analyst is a specialist who works on developing the high-level expertise necessary to produce accurate projections and recommendations in a particular industry.

How to become a research analyst

Step 1
Take Commerce or Science stream with mathematics at +2 level

Studying Commerce or Science stream with maths at the +2 level would be the prerequisite for a career in research analysis

Step 2
Take B.Sc. Mathematics/ Statistics

The common courses offered at the UG level in this area is BSc in Mathematics or Statistics which is of 3 years duration.

Step 3
Take M.Sc. in Mathematics/ Statistics

After completing the UG you can go for Masters in Math/ Statistics which is of 2 years. There is no rigid academic path for becoming a Research analyst. If you have the basics in Mathematics Computer programming and interest in research, there are various courses available online for becoming a research analyst.

Note :

Post graduate diploma in business analytics(PGDBA) which can be taken up after a bachelor’s degree in any discipline and other certificate programs are available.

Skills Required

Communication skills

Research analysts must possess good communication skills as they are required to present their findings to a group of colleagues or the management and have to convey matters effectively.

Analysing skills

Research analysts will use their excellent analyzing skills to notice patterns within the data which reveals clues as to what the data can tell them, as well as what is useful for the purpose and what to pass up.

Observation skills

Depending on the area of research and population, a research analyst may be working directly with people or analyzing their actions or beliefs. In order to accurately analyse the data from these surveys keen observation skills are highly required.

Writing skills

They also need to write out clear and concise reports to explain and summarize their data and conclusions. Thus good writing skills are highly required.

Basic Computer skills

Research analysts will be expected to produce professional quality reports, complete with charts, graphs and diagrams that illustrate points clearly. They need to be familiar with basic Microsoft Office Suite, Excel and Powerpoint as well as map creation software, financial analysis software and desktop publishing etc

Mathematical and Financial skills

Research analysts will work with large quantities of data, so they need to have a high degree of comfort with Math and Statistics. They also need to be comfortable performing calculations such as percentages and ratios, and to understand what they mean in your research.
