As a fitness trainer you will be leading and teaching group fitness classes, designing exercise programs for individuals as well as coaching people on how to live healthy lifestyles.
Fitness trainers develop and oversee activities in strength training, stretching, and exercise to motivate and train clients to meet their physical fitness goals. They may specialize in aerobics, weight lifting, yoga or another activity. They assess the physical and mental improvement of their clients, make changes in techniques and develop a program to meet their client’s requirements. They also educate clients on nutrition, lifestyle, and weight control to maintain good health. They teach their clients how to remain safe and free from injury and also administer first aid, wrap injuries, and evaluate the need of further treatment by a physician.
Take any stream at + 2 level for taking up further studies to become a fitness trainer. Active participation in sports and fitness programs right from school level is recommended.
Take a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise and Sports Science which is of 4 years duration . A BPE or BP Ed course is of 3 to 4 years duration and is available in Physical education colleges across India. Bachelor’s degree programs (BAE- Physical Education) are also available in universities abroad which are of 4 year duration
Post graduate diploma of 1 year duration in fitness management is available in some institutes in India
There are a number of certifications offered by different bodies across the world like the American Council on Exercise (ACE), National Academy of Sports Medicine-USA (NASM), International Sports Sciences Association ( ISSA). There are fitness training institutes in India which provide training towards these certifications.
There are private institutes providing certified fitness trainer courses of short duration for high school and higher secondary school pass outs , which may enable them to take up jobs as fitness trainers in private Gyms.
Although postgraduate or higher qualifications are not essential requirements, it may be an added advantage if seeking employment in international sports clubs/teams. MSc in Exercise and Sports Sciences or MP Ed/ MPE /MAE(Physical Education) courses which are usually of 2 to 3 years duration are available in India and abroad
