As a nutritionist /dietitian you will provide consultation on nutrition and diet in order to enable people to adopt a healthy lifestyle and remain free of diseases.

What do Nutritionists/ Dietitians do?

Nutritionists provide advice to clients about diet and nutrition and the relationship between good eating habits and the prevention or management of diseases. They develop meal plans based on the client’s needs and preferences and also on the cost. Dieticians may work in hospitals and health-care facilities providing medical nutrition therapy to patients. They develop and prescribe special diet plans for patients with particular diseases like kidney failure, hypertension and diabetes.

What does a typical day at work involve?

The tasks of Nutritionists and dieticians in a typical day’s work may vary depending up on their areas of specialisation. These may involve

  • Checked Counselling clients about their eating habits and lifestyle
  • Checked Preparing diet plans to provide specialised nutrition support for patients
  • Checked Working with sports and fitness centres to help athletes and clients to reach their goals with dietary plans
  • Checked Providing nutritional knowledge to food industry organisations

  • Checked Creating and participating in awareness programmes about healthy food choices
  • Checked Evaluating the effectiveness of the meal plans by follow up making the necessary changes if required

How to become a Nutritionist/ Dietitian

Step 1
Take Science stream with biology in +2

Taking science stream with physics, biology, and chemistry as main subjects with an aggregate score of 55% in all the subjects is a prerequisite for admission to the graduate program in almost every college and institution.

Step 2
Take B.Sc in Nutrition and Dietetics

This is generally 3 years course. Admission procedures may vary depending on the institutions.

Step 3
Take MSc in Nutrition and Dietetics

This is a 2 years course. Some institutions conduct entrance exams and in others the admission criteria is merit based.

Note :
  • Post graduate diploma of 1 year duration in Dietetics and Nutrition may also be taken up.
  • To become a registered dietitian you must pass the registered dietitian (RD) examination by the Indian Dietetics Association after becoming a postgraduate (or PG diploma holder) in Nutrition & Dietetics
Step 4
Take Mphil/PhD

Further studies in this field is recommended for those who are interested in pursuing a research career in related fields.
