Performing Arts is a field in which the artistes manifest their skills through performances by which they express their opinions, emotions and feelings or narrate a storyline in front of a public audience in modes like music, dance, theatre , public speech and more.

Various disciplines of performing arts


The field of music deals with a wide range of areas of study including performance, composition, music theory, musicology/music history.


This field aims at expression of ideas and emotions through dance forms such as ballet, modern, jazz, ethnic, and folk dance. Students will also learn dance technique, choreography, and the history of dance.

Dramatic Arts

Study of Theatre arts or Dramatic arts allow students to plan, produce and star in plays, musicals, recitals or even short films. It may also involve the study of the history of evolution and development of the different genres of theatre arts

What should I do to get admission at UG level

Stream to Choose at +2 level:

Selecting a specific stream is not a prerequisite for admission to a bachelor’s course in performing arts. However an active involvement in performing arts activities parallel to academics will be of advantage.

Subjects to focus:

Students who plan to join bachelor’s in performing arts should make use of opportunities to take part in their interested art form along with their studies. Participations in youth festivals at district and state level would be an added advantage for building a good portfolio for admissions. For admission to good institutions, a high aggregate percentage is important. So you should aim to score high in all subjects.

Some skills to acquire:

Student’s taking up performing arts should have self confidence and be aware of their talents in the field. Moreover good self discipline, creativity, perseverance and time management skills will be required for undergoing training to be a successful performer or professional in any field of performing arts.

Minimum marks:

Admission to bachelor’s courses in performing arts does not generally stipulate a minimum percentage at +2. Admissions may also depend on interviews and/or certificates of achievement/participation in relevant performing arts areas.

NCPA Scholarship Scholarship for young Indian musicians, age limit for Khayal/Tabla/Pakhawaj 18 to 30 years of age, for Dhrupad 18 to 35 years of age.
IndusInd Foundation Scholarship The applicant should have secured admission to regular degree courses in arts, science, commerce, engineering, medicine etc in approved colleges with 80% marks in class XII examination and the financial position of the applicant’s family should justify grant of scholarship.
Kerala Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship Students who are above 80 percentile of successful candidates in the relevant stream from the respective Board of Examination in Class XII of 10+2 pattern or equivalent and whose parents’ earnings are not more than Rs 6 lakh per annum.
State Merit Scholarship, Kerala Applicant must be a first-year student studying in an undergraduate/ postgraduate course in a government/ aided college or university department, must have scored 50% or above in the qualifying examination and the annual family income must not be more than Rs 1 Lac.
Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music Scholarship Candidates registered for the Diploma program, applying for the scholarship must provide three links of their Youtube videos that best showcase their knowledge on music (not exceeding a total of 15 minutes)
Postgraduate - (PG)
Merit Cum Means Scholarship Financial assistance will be provided to students belonging to minority communities, doing their studies in a recognized institutions in India, and scored at least 50% marks in the previous final examination and the annual income of the family should not exceed INR 2.5 lakh
Post-Graduate Indira Gandhi Scholarship for Single Girl Child for PG Programs This scholarship is available to PG-I-year Girl students only (single girl child up to the age of 30 years at the time of admission in PG courses) who has taken admission in regular, full time first year master’s Degree course in any designated university or a post graduate college.

According to BBC report, this field is least likely to be affected by automation and advancements in the technology. The importance for arts has increased over a period of time.
