Dramatic Arts

As a Dramatic arts professional you will create, direct and enact plays on a stage in front of an audience. Drama is a form of narrative involving stories portrayed in a wide variety of styles or genres.

What do dramatic artists do?

A dramatic arts professional works on scripting, acting, direction and other aspects of theatre performances. The work includes engaging in training sessions, acting workshops, performing on stages and participating in events.

What does a typical day at work involve?

  • Checked Preparing scripts for plays, portraying characters for theater, film, television, and other performing arts media
  • Checked Reading scripts prepared by others to form a contextual basis for the character
  • Checked Making a study of the mood, feeling and emotion of the character before acting
  • Checked Practicing and rehearsing portrayal of diverse emotions such as humour, anger, love, etc in order to prepare for performances
  • Checked Directing a team of performers for a staging
  • Checked Providing voice-over in advertisements, animated movies, radio, etc
  • Checked Training for skills of dancing and singing
  • Checked Working as a part of a film, television, theatre or drama crew.

How to become a Dramatic Artist?

Step 1
Take any stream at +2 level

Choosing any stream at plus two level will make you eligible for doing bachelor’s in Dramatic arts.

Note :Participation in Arts

Participating in theatre performances and workshops will improve your skills and talent in dramatic arts. Certificates of your achievements in this field may help you to get admission in good institutions.

Step 2
Take BA in Theatre Arts

The common course offered at the UG level in this course is BA in Theatre Arts. The duration of the course will be 3 years.

Note : Diploma

There are 6 months- 2 year diploma courses for acting.

Step 3
Take Master’s in Theatre Arts

After completing a bachelor degree in Theatre arts you can either go for MA or MPA(Master of Performing Arts in Theatre Arts. The duration of the course will be two years.

Step 4
Go for doctoral studies

After pursuing Master’s you can go for M Phil or PhD if your profile (including portfolio, certificates of achievements and performance videos) and research proposal is excellent.

Skills Required

Clear communication skills

Stage actors will be supposed to say their lines clearly, project their voice, and pronounce words clearly so that audiences understand them, thus clear communication skills are necessary.


Actors use their creativity to understand and analyze their characters’ feelings and motives in order to portray the characters in the most acceptable and attractive way.

Physical Stamina

Actors may work for long hours, rehearsals and shooting can be long and exhausting, they need to have enough physical stamina and strength to meet the demands of the schedule including acting in more than one performance a day, and they must do so without getting overly tired. Thus they are required to have perseverance and physical stamina.

Reading skills

Actors are required to have good reading and comprehension skills as they need to read the scripts and interpret how the writer has described their character.

Team skills

Actors always need to work as a part of a team and help each other throughout the performance.

Reasoning and problem solving ability

Actors must possess reasoning skills and problem solving ability as they must remember all information about their character and they need to think of original, unusual, or creative ways of portraying them.
