As a musician you will be composing, conducting or performing music in any of a variety of styles either solo or in orchestras, bands or choirs.

What do Musicians do?

Musicians may create and arrange musical scores, play instruments, sing or perform in solo or group programmes, teach or train students in Music. They may work for movies, television programmes, theatre, commercials, bands and orchestras.

What does a typical day at work involve?

What you do on a typical day at work depends on the genre of music you are specialised in and your area of work. In general you may be

  • Checked Performing at concerts, theatres, festivals and other music venues
  • Checked Attending rehearsals or practising on your own
  • Checked preparing for auditions
  • Checked participating in recording sessions
  • Checked setting up/tuning your instrument and other equipment and arranging for its transportation if required
  • Checked handling business promotion activities, accounts, distribution of your recordings and negotiating fees for classes or performances
  • Checked seeking out new venues in which to perform and arranging tours through a manager or agent
  • Checked delivering classes to students in schools, or as private tutoring
  • Checked composing new songs and music

How to become a Musician?

Step 1
Take any stream at +2 level

You can choose any stream at +2 level to go for higher studies in Music.

Note :Participation in Arts

It is beneficial for you to learn Music parallelly outside the formal academic curriculum. Participating in Music programmes and competitions will improve your skills and talent. Certificates of your achievements in this field may help you to get admission in good institutions.

Step 2
Take Bachelor of Music in specialisation of choice

The common course offered at the UG level in this area is BA/ BPA Music or B.Mus.There are also various Music genres like Carnatic, Hindustani etc which may be chosen as specialisations. The duration of the course will be three years.

Note :

There are Diploma programs in Music of 1-2 years.

Step 3
Take Master’s in Music

After completing UG in Music you can go for MA Music which is of 2 years duration.

Step 4
Go for Doctoral Studies

After pursuing Master’s you can go for an M Phil or PhD if your profile (including portfolio, certificates of achievements, performance videos etc.) and research proposal is excellent.

  • B.A. (Hons.) / B.Mus./ B.PA. in Music
  • B.A./B.Com/B.Sc or any Bachelor’s Degree along with Diploma like Sangit Visharad/ Sangeet Prabhakar/ Sangeet Vid or equivalent
  • B.Mus from Mumbai University
  • Audition test (A student with BMus from Mumbai university with 70% or more need not appear for audition test.)

Foreign (For Master of Music (MMus)-choral conducting, vocal performance or organ performance at the University of Cambridge- UK)

  • Professional Bachelor (4 years) (BE/ BTech) with an overall grade of 70%. Or Bachelor of Arts/ Science/ Commerce/ Laws (3 years) with an overall grade of 70%. Or Masters with an overall grade of a Pass.
  • IELTS overall score of 7.5 with minimum score of 7.0 in each component.
  • TOEFL (IBT) score of 110 with minimum score of 25 in each component.
