As a musician you will be composing, conducting or performing music in any of a variety of styles either solo or in orchestras, bands or choirs.
Musicians may create and arrange musical scores, play instruments, sing or perform in solo or group programmes, teach or train students in Music. They may work for movies, television programmes, theatre, commercials, bands and orchestras.
What you do on a typical day at work depends on the genre of music you are specialised in and your area of work. In general you may be
Performing at concerts, theatres, festivals and other music venues
Attending rehearsals or practising on your own
preparing for auditions
participating in recording sessions
setting up/tuning your instrument and other equipment and arranging for its transportation if required
handling business promotion activities, accounts, distribution of your recordings and negotiating fees for classes or performances
seeking out new venues in which to perform and arranging tours through a manager or agent
delivering classes to students in schools, or as private tutoring
composing new songs and music
You can choose any stream at +2 level to go for higher studies in Music.
It is beneficial for you to learn Music parallelly outside the formal academic curriculum. Participating in Music programmes and competitions will improve your skills and talent. Certificates of your achievements in this field may help you to get admission in good institutions.
The common course offered at the UG level in this area is BA/ BPA Music or B.Mus.There are also various Music genres like Carnatic, Hindustani etc which may be chosen as specialisations. The duration of the course will be three years.
There are Diploma programs in Music of 1-2 years.
After completing UG in Music you can go for MA Music which is of 2 years duration.
After pursuing Master’s you can go for an M Phil or PhD if your profile (including portfolio, certificates of achievements, performance videos etc.) and research proposal is excellent.
